 Procedure for Getting Online FIR

If you have come to know that any false and frivolous FIR (First Information Report) has been lodged against you at any police Station but you don’t know the FIR number, offences and the allegations leveled against you in that FIR.

Why copy of FIR is necessary for an accused before arrest?

After registration of FIR, any accused person is required to get bail before arrest (if not arrested) from the concerned competent court of law to avoid from being arrested, but for obtaining bail from the court, along with other documents, the copy of FIR is also required to be annexed with the petition for bail before arrest. The Petition for bail before arrest is usually filed in Session Court of that concerned District.  In some other cases, the Pre Arrest Bail Petition can be filed in High Court as well.

So, you should get copy of FIR First, without taking any risk so that you can apply for bail before arrest.

Do not go directly to police Station for obtaining copy of FIR.

If the accused himself directly goes to the Police Station for obtaining copy of the FIR, there is an apprehension of accused being arrested. So to avoid arrest, the accused should not go to the Police Station directly rather he should send some one (your relative or friend) to Police station for obtaining copy of the FIR. If the police is reluctant to provide the copy of FIR or even don’t tell information about FIR like FIR number, offence or allegation etc, there are some other ways by which, the copy of FIR can be obtained.

What information is needed for obtaining copy of FIR online in Punjab?

If you want to get FIR copy online, you are required to have information (1) Complaint number (2) Mobile Number of complainant. The complaint number is something different from FIR number. The complainant number is actually E-Tag number, allotted to each application when application is filed to concerned Police Station.  Here is an example of E-Tag number. The red highlighted portion is the E-Tag number. It is also mentioned on the Receipt which is given to the applicant at the time of filing of application.

So, if you have these two information, you can  get copy of FIR online but in some cases, despite of having these two  information  still you might not be able to download FIR copy or get FIR copy online. It might be for the  reasons of updation of record by police.
